Now use the words to fill in the blanks of the story your teacher gives you.

Creative exercises like this help you learn professional English in engaging ways while building confidence with business vocabulary.

Warm Up

Discuss the following with your teacher:

  1. Do you think you should memorize your presentation before giving it? Why or why not?
  2. Is it okay to make mistakes during a presentation?

Understanding how to prepare effectively is crucial when you learn professional English for high-stakes business presentations.

Language

There are a few ways to rehearse for a presentation. Can you think of others?

Rehearsal Method How It Helps Focus On
1. Record & Reflect Record yourself delivering a section of the presentation, then listen for clarity, pacing, and stress. - Clear pronunciation
- Natural pauses
- Does your tone sound confident?
2. Slide-to-Speech Practice Show only the slide keywords/images and explain aloud WITHOUT reading notes. - Staying on-message
- Linking visuals to speech
- Avoiding reading word-for-word
3. Simulate Q&A Have a partner ask likely questions (or tough ones!) and practice responding on the spot. - Handling interruptions
- Using bridging language (“That’s a great question…”)
- Staying calm & concise

These professional English techniques help you build the muscle memory needed for confident executive-level delivery.

Sometimes, memorizing common phrases is helpful, as long as you can say them using a good, energetic tone (see Lesson 13)! These are situations that you will always come across during a presentation. Create a few example phrases that you can have in your back pocket that you'll be able to say naturally during your presentation. Your teacher also has a few ideas, so practice reading and then saying them until you feel comfortable using them.

Presentation Stage Example Phrases

Imagine you’re presenting this slide to the VP of Strategy and senior managers.

Speak for 30–60 seconds, explaining the slide naturally (not just reading bullets).

Next Steps

Our next lesson will look specifically at filler and crutch words and how to minimise and avoid them. These are the words we use when nervous to fill the silence, but this is considered informal and it makes us sound unprepared. Can you think of any you or a colleague might use when public speaking?
